A year ago, public outrage saved the Salt River wild horses from roundup and eradication from the Tonto National Forest near Phoenix, Arizona.
Last week, community action saved a band of beloved wild horses after they were captured and removed from their home range in Alto, New Mexico. The horses faced sale at a slaughter auction before the neighborhood mobilized to save the horses and the Wild Horse Observers Association filed a lawsuit. Now the New Mexico Department of Agriculture has agreed to return the horses to their home and the residents of Alto are celebrating.
